Experiential kit to empathize with the difficulties and frustrations of people with Rheumatoid Arthritis in performing simple daily actions

There are 50 million people living with AR worldwide. In recent years, medical progresses have alleviated the inconvenience of the disease for patients. At the same time awareness in the community decreased, making this disease often invisible. What does it mean to live with AR and how to tell it? How to bring people to understand, empathically, what it is like to perform simple daily actions with certain conditions? This kit is an invitation to identify yourself in the daily life of a life with AR, through an experiential activity: the simulation of 3 apparently simple actions:

  1. Zooming circles on the display using a special elastic band - useful for making people understand how an activity so simple it is difficult because of a greater rigidity in the movements of the fingers.
  2. Open a jar wearing a special glove, designed to simulate the experience of those who live regularly with swollen hands and with little finger sensitivity
  3. Grab a coin and insert it into a slot (simulating a parking meter or an automatic machine) wearing a rigid plexiglass ring that limits hand movements, as for those who experience pain when handling small objects.

The Arthritis Kit was presented in 2018 at Maker Faire Rome and as part of the Triennale di Milano exhibition "999. A collection of questions on contemporary living" where OpenDot and Sanofi Genzyme promoted a series of meetings. The meetings involved doctors, patient associations, makers and designers in a shared reflection starting from the concept that "taking care is different than treating", investigating the new scenarios of healthcare capable of going beyond treatment. Sono 50 milioni le persone che convivono con l’AR nel mondo. Negli ultimi anni i progressi della medicina hanno alleviato i disagi della malattia per i pazienti, ma allo stesso tempo diminuito la consapevolezza nella collettività, rendendo tale patologia spesso invisibile.
Cosa significa convivere con l’AR e come raccontarlo? Come portare le persone a capire, in modo empatico, ciò che si prova a compiere semplici azioni quotidiane in determinate condizioni?
Questo kit è un invito ad immedesimarsi nella quotidianità di una vita con l’AR, attraverso un'attività esperienziale: la simulazione di 3 azioni apparentemente semplici, come zoomare dei cerchi su display utilizzando un apposito elastico - utile a far comprendere come un'attività così semplice risulti difficile a causa di una maggiore rigidità nei movimenti delle dita; aprire un barattolo calzando un guanto speciale, progettato per rendere l'azione complicata come per chi convive regolarmente con mani gonfie e con poca sensibilità nelle dita; afferrare una moneta e inserirla nella fessura (potrebbe essere un parchimetro o una macchinetta automatica) indossando un anello rigido di plexiglass che limita i movimenti della mano, come per chi avverte dolore nel maneggiare piccoli oggetti.

Il Kit Artrite è stato presentato nel 2018 in occasione di Maker Faire Rome e nell’ambito della mostra della Triennale di Milano "999. Una collezione di domande sull’abitare contemporaneo" dove OpenDot e Sanofi Genzyme hanno promosso una serie di incontri che hanno coinvolto medici, associazioni di pazienti, maker e designer in una riflessione condivisa a partire dal concetto secondo cui “prendersi cura è diverso che curare”, indagando i nuovi scenari dell’healthcare capaci di andare oltre la cura.
